The elastic band is used as the closure. Hardcover journals fit best, designed to hold pens in place with the elastic band, without them slipping out. We have employees who only use Leuchtturm1917 journals because they like how the pages are each numbered and that they have a table of contents that you can put in there to find notes. It’s interesting the controversy.
